One Percent for the Planet is an alliance of companies that recognize the true cost of doing business and donate 1% of their sales to environmental organizations worldwide. Through our corporate giving, grants and philanthropy, we encourage responsible business and corporate responsibility. Our environmental alliance is designed to help our members become sustainable businesses and our environmental group database aids our membership to make choices with their corporate grants to environmental organizations.

Business Alliance Membership Each alliance member contributes 1% of its revenues to any of the environmental organizations listed on this website. In an effort to reduce attendant bureaucracy and encourage members to develop independent relationships with the groups they support, member companies disburse their own contributions. To maintain membership and use of the 1% FTP member logo, 1% FTP annually certifies that member companies have granted at least 1% of their sales to approved environmental organizations.

Environmental Organizations 1% FTP maintains a database of nonprofit organizations that we have researched to ensure credibility and alignment with our environmental criteria. We do this to make sure that the organizations supported by 1% FTP business members are bona fide environmental groups, with a clear mission and objectives and a track record of effective environmental projects.

Kiva lets you lend to a specific entrepreneur in the developing world - empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty. Each pre-screend entrepeneur is hard working and hopes to create a sustainambe livelihood. All they need is a small load.

Kiva is an organization that allows people to lend money via the internet to small businesses in developing countires. It is a non profit organization headquartered in San Francisco, supported by donations from its users and through partnerships with PayPal, YouTube, Google, My Space,Microsoft, and others. It expects to be self-sustaining by the end of 2008.

Loans from Kiva's participants are pooled together and given to partnering microfinance institutions, who in turn lend the money to entrepreneurs. The loans provide 0% interest to Kiva's lenders. Kiva itself charges no interest from the entrepreneur, but says that, beginning in 2007, it will collect 2% interest from the microfinance institution involved. The borrowing entrepreneurs are generally charged some interest by the microfinance institutions handling their loans, although Kiva claims to keep track of how much interest is charged and will not work with those charging unfair interest rates.Kiva claims that its borrowers have a historical repayment rate of about 99.7% It is working with regulators to allow microfinance institutions to offer variable interest rates to lenders

The Outward Bound Trust offers structured residential development courses with the purpose of raising self-esteem and confidence, developing skills and preparing young people from every background for the challenges that life brings.

They use that money to help as many young people as possible to have access to safe, adventurous experiences through which they can raise their self-esteem, realise their full potential and achieve more than they ever thought possible.

"We are all better than we know. If only we can be brought to realise this, we may never be prepared to settle for anything less."
[KURT HAHN, CO-FOUNDER OF OUTWARD BOUND®]

The Outward Bound Trust exists to turn these words into reality for an ever- increasing number of young people. To unlock the potential in young people through discovery and adventure in the wild.

CORE VALUES

  • A belief that we all have undiscovered potential - aim to create moments when everyone can see and believe in themselves as never before and to translate such moments into lessons for everyday life.
  • A belief in the power and magic of learning through adventure in the wild - as a means of bringing out the best in people.
  • A deep appreciation of the balance between risk, reward and responsibility - want people to have intense experiences with real consequences and powerful, positive and memorable outcomes.
  • A spirit of respect and compassion - aim to stretch people both physically and mentally. In doing so we act with care, concern and generosity towards people and the natural environment.
